I tried adding -d to the Mintty command ends up with a window with black text on a red background saying Failed to fork child process: Resource temporarily unavailable. I will try your update to see if it makes any difference and let you know. I tried updating Mintty but it yesterday seemed that I was already running the latest version that is available for download. It might be therefor possible that this is somehow a thing where Mintty is unable to fork off Launchy, therefor declaring defeat and showing a notification. However, no other program started showing problematic behaviour with Launchy after updating Win10 to build 10586, only Mintty.
It now seems that the problem lies in using Launchy to start Cygwin, because that's the only way I am getting this detaching error. I am however, using Launchy to be able to quickly start stuff by hitting alt-space, typing a few letters, and hitting enter. It turns out, that in both situations everything is working just fine, as long as I just launch via the start menu or directly via the shortcut. Download the standalone version, run the executable, and you'll be going in no time. Just a very satisfied customer who simply loves how easy it is to install and use. But, I'm able to quite easily access and work with remote Linux boxes using my favorite GUI interfaces - all popping up quite nicely in Windows. My primary machine at work is (unfortunately) Windows. It's got X server capabilities so you can launch Linux apps and have them served up locally on the Windows box. Cygwin installation will work best if you are logged in as a user. You can easily create session shells to Linux boxes from your windows machine. Another advantage is that you can resize the mintty window horizontally as well as vertically. You get the nice wide console that you don't get from the pre-packaged Windows cmd.exe. It's a self-contained Windows application, works on Windows 7 & 8, and includes a plugin for Cygwin. To answer the wider question about surviving on a Windows box coming from a Linux world, I'd like to recommend MobaXterm from Mobatek.
